Your sexual health is an important decision
College is a time when people make many decisions about their sexuality, such as abstaining from sexual intercourse and becoming or continuing to be sexually active. The type of contraception to use, the intensity of relationships, and the gender of partners are other sexuality issues that are decided. Having sex is a personal choice, so you should never be pressured by others to do so. The same applies to the very first time, as well as to every subsequent time.
Whether you are currently or considering becoming sexually active, the following are important topics to cover with your chosen partner(s).
- Affirmative consent must be given before engaging in ANY sexual act.
- Before you decide to have a sexual relationship, you should talk with your partner and then decide if the decision is right for you.
- Discuss whether you or your partner plan on having sex with other people. Make sure to ask about your partner鈥檚 sexual history, including if they have been exposed to sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Get tested for STI: Find more information about STI testing online with Decker Student Health Services.
- The risk of getting an STI is increased if you or your partner have sexual intercourse with other people.
- The only way to completely prevent STIs is to be abstinent (not have sex).
- If you鈥檙e sexually active, use a condom every time you have sex.
- Birth control pills, injections, and IUDs do not prevent STIs.
- Talk to your partner about birth control: If you鈥檙e engaging in sexual activity that can result in pregnancy, consider exploring birth control options (condoms, birth control pills, hormone injections, IUDs, implants).
- Discuss with your partner what you both would do if preganancy occurs.
